"Archie Bunker-isms"

All in the Family - The one and olny...Archie Bunker

Description: Term used to describe the ignorant, bigoted remarks of Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor) 'Connor) from the situation comedy ALL IN THE FAMILY CBS/1968-1979 and the spin-off ARCHIE BUNKER‘S PLACE/CBS/1979-1983.

Archie Bunker ain’t no bigot. I’m the first to say “Look, it ain’t your fault you’re colored.”

Archie calls his wife, Edith, a “Dingbat”; his son-in-law, Mike Stivic, a “Meathead”; and refers to ethnic groups by such pejorative nicknames as ‘nigger,’ ‘wop,’ ‘chink,’ and ‘pollack.’

Here are a few more examples of Archie’s offensive nature:

Archie: You are the laziest white boy I ever met.
Mike: You wanna call me lazy, okay. But you don't have to put down a whole race just to do it!
Archie: I wasn’t putting down a whole race.
Mike: Yes, you were. You said I was the laziest white boy you ever met.
Archie: That’s right. You.
Mike: Meaning that the blacks are even lazier.
Archie: Wait a second wise guy. I didn’t say that. You’re the one
who said that. I never said blacks were lazy. I never said
that...of course, their systems is geared a little slower
than ours, that’s all.”

Archie: Now, no prejudice intended, but I always check with the
Bible on these here things. I think that, I mean if God had
meant for us to be together he’d a put us together. But look
what he done. He put you over in Africa, and put the rest of
us in all the white countries.

Archie: If your spics and your spades want their rightful share of the American dream, let ‘em get out there and hustle for it like I done.
Mike: So now you’re going to tell me the black man has just as must chance as
the white man to get a job?
Archie: More, he has more...I didn’t have no million people marchin’and protestin’ to get me my job.
Edith: No, his uncle got it for him.

Note: During the Depression, Archie Bunker's family was poor and did not have enough money to buy him a proper new pair of shoes, so consequently, he had to wear one shoe and one bootie as makeshift footwear. Hence, his childhood nickname was "Shoebootie."

ALL IN THE FAMILY series was inspired by the British sitcom TILL DEATH US DO PART/BBC/1966-75 wherein, Alf Garnett (Warren Mitchell), a cockney, bigoted, anti-socialist resents the fact that his daughter Rita (Una Stubbs) is in love with Mike Rawlins (Anthony Booth), the counterpart of Mike Stivic ("Meathead"). Alf dislikes Mike because of his long hair and his socialist views. He calls Mike a "git."
